ITALIAN STATES, Sicily (kingdom), Messina, 2 tari, Carlo V, 1541, mintmaster IP, NGC AU 50, finest and only example in NGC census, ex-Vidal Quadras (stated on label), ex-Muntaner. Vti-167; Cru.C.G.-4171f; MIR-292/2. 5.85 grams. Bold and well-detailed portrait of the Holy Roman Emperor (with INPERATOR [sic] very bold in legend), the crowned eagle on reverse also choice with I-P below for mintmaster Giovanni Andrea Papardo, plus with bold full SICILIE in legend followed by date 1541 (middle digits weak), all well centered on a broad flan with deep, beautiful rainbow toning, a particularly appealing example of this scarce dated issue, with a distinguished pedigree extending to the Vidal Quadras Collection. Pedigreed to the Vidal Quadras Collection (coin 6974, with original old tag) and to the Ramón Muntaner Collection (Aureo & Calicó auction of April 2014, lot 856).
